Karl Weaver

Karl Weaver was born in Inman, South Carolina, in 1937. Following service in the U.S. Army, he moved to Pompano Beach in 1957. He taught in the Broward County public school system for several years and then founded Playtime Day Care Center in 1969.

Weaver was elected to the Pompano Beach City Commission in 1973. to an at-large seat -- he didn't have the advantage of running in a "black district." It was during his two-year , term, and with his strong advocacy, that the Collier City neighborhood was annexed into the city.

Mr. Weaver was active in the community, including service on the board of directors of both the Pompano Beach Historical Society and the Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society.

In 2005, the City of Pompano Beach named an eleven acre park located at 800 NW 20 Street in his memory.

Karl Weaver, the first black elected to the Pompano Beach City Commission, passed away on May 25, 2006, at the age of 69.
